海洋政策研究所では2015年の第21回国連気候変動枠組条約締約国会議（COP21）以降、毎年のCOPにおいて各国NGOや国際機関とともに「Oceans Action Day」を開催し、海洋と気候変動に関する諸課題について集中的に議論してきました。本年はコロナ下において主要国際会議が延期となっているなか、海洋分野からの議論を持続するためにも、本来のCOP26会期中に、オンラインにて「Virtual Oceans Action Day 2020」を開催します。
本イベントでは、2021年に英国・グラスゴーで開催予定のCOP26に向けて、気候危機への対処、とりわけ海洋分野での対策に向けた政策・行動とベストプラクティスの共有に議論の焦点を当てます。また、気候・海洋分野の世界のリーダー達により、12月2日、3日（日本時間では3日、4日のAM5:30～AM8:00）にバーチャル形式で開催される気候変動枠組条約「海洋と気候変動対話」に向けたビジョンを発表するためのプラットフォームの提供を目指します。
