The aging of societies has become a common issue in East Asia. In South Korea, Long-Term Care Insurance, a system equivalent to Japan’s Public Nursing Care Insurance, went into force in July 2008. In China too, with an enormous aging population, there is a rising awareness of the need to share experiences with other countries with a view to creating specific measures to address the issues brought on by an aging demographic. This project aims to pursue the possible application of Japan’s knowledge of an aging society to the Asian region and to proactively share such experience with applicable countries. In fiscal 2008, a preparatory meeting was held to determine whether Japan’s efforts to deal with its aging population are applicable throughout Asia. Two materials were drafted: A Practical Guide to Japan’s Aging Society published in Japanese, Korean, and Chinese, which explains terminology and systems related to the issue of the aging society in Japan; and Case Study of the Aging
Japanese Society which is a compilation of government, NPO and private-sector efforts to deal with this issue. These materials will be utilized starting next fiscal year to discuss the general applicability of such cases in other Asian countries.
