The Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), in collaboration with diverse stakeholders including the Thai Ministry of Education, local administration authorities in the pilot areas, the Japan International Labour Foundation (JILAF), and Nogezaka Glocal, is implementing a project to promote school enrollment for the children of migrant workers from neighboring countries. The project is being carried out in the Bangborn, Bang Khun Thian, Prawet, and Lat Krabang districts of the Bangkok Metropolitan Area, as well as in Thapma Municipality, Rayong Province.
Based on the specific circumstances and challenges faced by migrant families and children in each area, this project places a strong emphasis on empowering local actors—such as local authorities, schools, community residents, and the migrant workers and their families themselves. Together, they explore and implement effective approaches to promote school enrollment and Thai language learning.
Rather than having external organizations impose a standardized support model, the project focuses on creating mechanisms that enable the communities to identify their own challenges and develop and improve solutions. This is achieved by utilizing existing local human resources, assets, administrative systems, and networks. Through these initiatives, the project aims to establish an environment where children of migrant families who wish to continue living in Thailand can smoothly access public education. Furthermore, it seeks to integrate school enrollment promotion activities and Thai language learning support into local administrative policies and existing systems, ensuring that the communities can independently sustain and develop these efforts.
