International Symposium
Highlighting Outcomes of SDG14 Think Tank III
"Towards the Development of a Post-SDGs Framework for Ocean and Island Nations"

Host:Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF)

As 2030 approaches, the SDG14 Think Tank, comprising leading experts in ocean policy, marine science, and international cooperation, has been advancing discussions on the principles, institutional frameworks, and cooperative mechanisms needed to support the sustainable use and conservation of the ocean beyond 2030. Building on the achievements and lessons of SDG 14 (Life Below Water), the Think Tank has been exploring pathways toward a long-term vision for global ocean governance.

In this context, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, in collaboration with the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Ocean, the Friends of Ocean Action (FOA) of the World Economic Forum, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will host the Third SDG14 Think Tank Meeting. Drawing on discussions from previous meetings, the Tokyo gathering will incorporate perspectives from the Asia-Pacific region and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) while examining the future direction of the post-2030 ocean agenda. The meeting will also contribute to international policy discussions leading up to the 2027 SDG Summit and the Fourth United Nations Ocean Conference in 2028.

This public event aims to share the key outcomes of the Third SDG14 Think Tank Meeting and foster dialogue on the actions needed to achieve SDG 14 and shape ocean governance beyond 2030. Through exchanges among policymakers, experts, researchers, and other stakeholders, the event will explore opportunities for collaboration and collective action to realize a sustainable ocean future, while contributing to future policy development and international cooperation.
