On Thursday, May 14, 2026, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation welcomed Director General Kristi Land of the Legal Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia, along with other senior officials, and held an exchange of views in the field of the law of the sea. The meeting was attended by Senior Fellow Atsuko Kanehara and other experts, who shared perspectives on maritime affairs from an international standpoint.

On March 11, 2026, a study session for members of the National Diet was held on the theme of youth mental health. Cross-party members of the Diet and experts from the U.S. participated in the session. IINA: Civil-Military Relations Under the Trump Administration (Part 2) -- Relations Between Civil Society and the Military: The Debate Over Domestic Policing Actions by the Military

Part 1 of this series pointed out differences between President Trump and his lieutenants, on the one hand, and the military in general, on the other, regarding the use of the military for domestic security missions: the former tends to favor such use, while the latter is more cautious. It is also a difference in attitude toward how the military, the largest and most powerful organization in the country, confronts people with guns at the ready, which may lead to a conception that the military stands against civil society. In considering this issue, which is directly related to the relationship between civil society and the military in the United States, we must understand the unique American institutions behind it.

IINA: Japan’s Maritime Cluster Seen from a Security Perspective: Toward the Reconstruction of Japan’s Shipbuilding Industry

The Government of Japan is working to strengthen its maritime cluster through public-private partnerships. The backdrop to this effort is the decline in the international competitiveness of Japan’s maritime cluster. In particular in the shipbuilding industry, Japan’s global market share of shipbuilding orders received has shrunk to approximately 8% and China and the Republic of Korea have the overwhelming advantage. For this reason, the government formulated and announced the Shipbuilding Industry Revitalization Roadmap on December 26, 2025 with the objective of reconstructing Japan’s shipbuilding industry
