"Third Country Resettlement: Refugee Hosting in Japan and Future Prospects"
Symposium on the Project 'Policy Framework for Refugee Acceptance and the Role of Japan'
Thursday, February 27, 2014, 15:00-17:30
The Sasakawa Peace Foundation has recently completed a set of proposals on creating an improved system for third country resettlement and resettlement support, based on domestic and international surveys and round table discussions with multiple stakeholders. In a related development, the Japanese cabinet took the decision on January 24 to continue the third country resettlement program from FY2015.

To mark this occasion, the Foundation hosted a symposium, inviting honoured guests Mr. Nakamura, the Counsellor to the Cabinet Secretariat of Japan, who coordinated the government's decision making process of the resettlement program, Professor Ikegami of Shizuoka University of Art and Culture, member of the government council of experts, Ms. Obi, Vice-representative of the Japan office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and Associate Professor Akashi of the University of Tsukuba, who worked on the Foundation's surveys and proposals. The symposium featured the main points and issues in the review process carried out by all parties, as well as a discussion on future prospects.
