The Sasakawa Peace Foundation, in collaboration with the United States Association of Former Members of Congress (FMC), is pleased to invite you to attend a panel discussion on October 25 with two former Members of the United States Congress, Mr. Cliff Stearns (Republican) and Mr. Jason Altmire (Democrat) for a discussion.

The 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, which will be held on November 8th, has attracted global attention. In retrospect, there were two surprises in this electoral process. The first surprise was Mr. Trump as the nominee of the Republican Party for President. Mr. Trump was considered as a “fringe candidate” in the beginning of the race. However, he has since acquired huge support. The other surprise was that Mr. Sanders made an impressive showing at the polls against Ms. Clinton, who was heavily favored. Mr. Trump’s base remains white blue-collar workers, and Mr. Sanders won enormous support from the youth during the primary elections season. The underlining cause of this is a discontent with the status quo and distrust of elites. And it illustrates the possibility of creating “radical” political leaders through democratic process. As a result, some argue that the democracy itself must be re-examined.

The Sasakawa Peace Foundation welcomes a bipartisan pair of former Members of Congress for a public forum to hear their thoughts and opinion on the current situation, and how it will shape the future of American politics. Prof. Toshihiro Nakayama of Keio University, a prominent expert in US politics, presides at a panel as a moderator to facilitate active discussion, especially by providing Japan’s perspective on this issue.
