The Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI), the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Japan implemented the research project titled “Bangladesh’s First Deep Seaport: Matarbari Heralds a New Vista in the Bay of Bengal Region”. The project was successfully implemented between October 2023 to March 2024.

The Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI) of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation recognizes the urgent need to nurture the next generation of ocean leaders who will be active in 2030 and beyond in order to realize sustainable use of the ocean, and has set a goal of supporting 100 young people over five years starting in 2022.

[Event Report] UN Ocean Decade ECOP Japan Symposium
Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) in Japan who are active in various fields, sectors, and regions introduced their activities and discussed the challenges they currently face and their expectations for the future. As an outcome of the symposium, an ECOP Japan poster was created with the message of "Connected by the Sea" as well as images and future actions from the perspective of ECOPs.

National Seminar On Bangladesh’s First Deep Seaport: Matarbari Heralds a New Vista in the Bay of Bengal Region
The Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI), the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), Japan implemented the research project titled “Bangladesh’s First Deep Seaport: Matarbari Heralds a New Vista in the Bay of Bengal Region”. The project was successfully implemented between October 2023 to March 2024. The national seminar schedule on 19th March 2024 is aimed at sharing the findings with key stakeholders. This seminar will be hosted by OPRI-SPF.

[Event Report] The first workshop and policy dialogue platform on “Blue Impact Finance” in the Asia-Pacific region
The Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI) of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI), and the Social Innovation and Investment Foundation (SIIF) co-hosted the "Workshop on Accelerating Ocean Investment with Blue Impact Finance" in Tokyo, Japan during February 19-21, 2024. The workshop brought together as participants various government officials, investors, and startups from 15 countries around Asia, Europe, the US, and the Pacific. This was an unprecedented platform and represented the frontier of the dialogue on blue impact finance.

Call for candidates to attend - 9th Our Ocean Conference Youth Forum in Athens, Greece
Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI), the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, invites students who are studying and researching ocean-related issues in the natural and social sciences from an interdisciplinary perspective. Interested young people actively engaged in activities in this field, are encouraged to participate in this conference and forum.

Ocean Shot Research Grant: Commencement of Funding for Selected Projects
We are pleased to announce the initiation of the Ocean Shot Research Grant, a program dedicated to advancing innovative studies for the better understanding and sustainable management of our oceans. After careful evaluation of 30 outstanding proposals from Japan (11), Europe (9), the United States (7), Oceania (2), and Africa (1), we have chosen four projects we consider exceptional to receive funding:

The Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI) of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation sees the development of ocean leaders who will promote and realize the sustainable use of our ocean for the next generation as an urgent issue and is working from 2022 to support 100 young people over five years and to provide programs that use various vessels or international conferences as a platform for the youth capacity development.
