Satoumi is defined as “Coastal areas where high productivity and biodiversity conservation are achieved through human intervention in harmony with natural ecosystems". This briefing paper showcases good examples of biodiversity conservation in Japan through Satoumi-type community-centered integrated coastal management, and lessons learned from the 4 case studies; Shiretoko, Nanao Bay, Ago Bay, and Hinase.
