Awaring the fact that SDG 14 "Life below water" has the least progress and investment among the SDGs, the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (hereafter "the Ocean Decade") was launched in 2021 with the aim of accelerating progress and international cooperation in marine science. Under this framework, actions and international cooperation in various countries have been revitalized. As the first five years of the decade are passing, Japan is expected to accelerate its contributions to the world through marine science.
This project aims to analyze the activities, operational systems, and international partnerships implemented under the framework of the Ocean Decade, and to demonstrate the benefits of Japan's contribution. Policy recommendations, compiling expected structure and priority area identified based on that information, will be issued for the Japanese government and ocean-related research institutions.
