Japan–Taiwan Dialogue2025 Held with Taiwan Think Tank “Prospect Foundation”

On Tuesday, June 24, the annual Japan–Taiwan Dialogue 2025 was held in partnership with the Prospect Foundation in Taiwan. As part of a dialogue series that has taken place annually since the 2010s, this year’s event was hosted by our foundation and convened in Tokyo. The dialogue welcomed a delegation of seven researchers, including Chairman Tân Tông-san and Executive Director Lai I-Chung. This Dialogue unfolded across three focused sessions—general affairs, defense, and economic security—with in-depth exchanges centered on the rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait. Participants engaged in candid dialogue on how to deter potential conflict and preserve stability in Indo-Pacifi including Japan and Taiwan.

Held Discussions with students of National Chengchi university program in Japan studies

On Monday, June 16, the Strategy and Deterrence Group of the Japan-U.S. Security Research Unit hosted a visit from Professor LI Shui-Hui, Associate Professor Tadahiro Ishihara, Assistant Professor Yang Wen-Ting, and master's students from the Japanese Studies Program at the Institute of East Asian Studies, National Chengchi University . The visit began with a briefing by RADM Yamamoto, Director Strategy and Deterrence, who introduced the foundation's activities and related issues. This was followed by an exchange of views on Japan-Taiwan relations and security issues.

IINA: Japan’s Strategy of “Proactive Restraint” in Defending the Senkaku Islands

In the waters surrounding the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, incursions into Japanese territorial waters by vessels belonging to the China Coast Guard (CCG), as well as their persistent presence in the contiguous zone just outside those waters, have become a near-daily occurrence. This trend is widely attributed to China’s reorganization of its maritime agencies and the incorporation of the CCG into the People’s Armed Police, which operates under the command of the Central Military Commission—resulting in enhanced capabilities and a more assertive posture.
