Strategic Dialogue and Exchange Program Seminars

Understanding Thai Politics

The Evolving Dynamics of Society and Politics

Hosted bySasakawa Peace Foundation

Thailand, a country familiar to many Japanese through tourism and business, operates under a constitutional monarchy. While navigating complex relationships with the royal family and the military, as well as deep-rooted social disparities, the nation has long sought political stability.

After 9 years under military rule, the 2023 general election saw a victory for the progressive former Move Forward Party. However, its leader was not elected as prime minister, and the party was later dissolved following a ruling by the Constitutional Court. Subsequently, the Pheu Thai Party, which has a strong support base in the northeastern region, came to power and formed a coalition government with the royalist-aligned Bhumjai Thai Party.

In June 2025, tensions over territorial claims with neighboring Cambodia escalated, leading to ethical scrutiny of the government’s diplomatic response. As a result, the administration was dismissed by the Constitutional Court, and the Bhumjai Thai Party withdrew from the coalition. A new government led by the Bhumjai Thai Party was established in September 2025, and preparations are currently underway for constitutional reform and the holding of a general election, marking a new phase in Thai politics.

This seminar will feature a lecture by Associate Professor Prajak Kongkirati from the Faculty of Political Science at Thammasat University, who also serves as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation. We are honored to welcome a member of Thailand’s House of Representatives to the discussion as well. Through conversations with Japanese experts, the seminar will offer a multifaceted understanding of Thailand’s current political landscape.

The session will offer clear and accessible explanations, making it suitable even for those new to Thai political affairs.
