Tea, Traffic, and Turkish Delight: A Cross-Cultural Business Trip to Türkiye

Between May 19-26, we were assigned to travel to Türkiye on an official business trip. Our mission was twofold: to facilitate a Japanese Taiko performance at the 8th Ethnosport Cultural Festival, and to explore how the new West Asia and Islam Unit can initiate future collaborations within Türkiye and other West Asian countries. By meeting stakeholders and learning about local social challenges firsthand, we aimed to help lay the groundwork for these potential partnerships.

IINA: Sudan in Turmoil: A Proxy War of the Middle East and the Risk of State Collapse

Three years have passed since the military clash erupted in Sudan in April 2023 between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary “Rapid Support Force (RSF)”, yet there is still no sign of a resolution to the conflict. Since April 2023, at the height of the crisis, approximately 14 million people have been displaced from their homes; more than 20 million—equivalent to half the population—have been exposed to severe food shortages and are at risk of starvation, sexual violence against women has been rampant, and there are reports that genocide may have occurred.

IINA: Australia’s National Defence Strategy and the Strengthening of Bilateral Ties with Japan

On April 16, 2026, the Australian government released the public version of its 2026 National Defence Strategy (NDS) in line with its commitment to update policy at two-year intervals. While the document contains no major “surprises”, it reflects a strengthening of resolve among defence planners and enduring commitment towards building Australian capabilities, both independently, and with key partners and allies such as Japan and US. This trajectory was mapped out in the earlier 2023 Defence Strategic Review (DSR) and proceeding National Defence Strategy (2024) but has taken on a new momentum in a worsening global and regional security environment.

IINA: Weaponizing the Strait of Hormuz: Naval Mines and the Spread of Economic Coercion

The United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran in late February 2026, prompting Iran to retaliate with attacks on US military bases and infrastructure in neighboring countries. A ceasefire remains in place as of May 21, but the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues, inflicting major damage to the global economy.
