SPF hosted a public forum entitled “SPF China Observer: A new U.S.-China Cold War? A look at China’s true intentions.” From escalating trade frictions to technological competition, the ongoing confrontation between the U.S. and China continues to affect not only economic relations, but also spans into the security and political realms as well. Given these circumstances, what are China’s ultimate objectives, and how will the country act moving forward? To address these questions and more, the forum assembled a panel of specialists in Chinese politics, economics, society, diplomacy, and security for in-depth discussions.

The Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI-SPF) is pleased to present the English edition of the "White Paper on the Oceans and Ocean Policy in Japan 2019," featuring selected articles by OPRI-SPF researchers and other experts. This is the second time the report has been made available in English, and the featured articles all aim to contribute to comprehensive and cross-sectoral efforts relating to ocean problems both in Japan and abroad and to provide information on recent trends and information on ocean issues.

The Japan–U.S. Program recently published a new book entitled The End of Nuclear Forgetting: Revival of Nuclear Weapons, featuring in-depth analysis aiming to address the reality of nuclear weapons in modern international relations from a Japanese perspective. As part of the book launch, SPF held an expert seminar, which included a special panel discussion with Frank A. Rose, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Verification, and Compliance; and M. Elaine Bunn, former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Missile Defense Policy, who considered the issues surrounding U.S. deterrence and disarmament strategy.
