Ocean Policy Research Institute

Science for the Ocean, Vision for the Future:
Leading Sustainable Ocean Policy
Covering over 70% of the Earth’s surface, the ocean sustains diverse ecosystems and vital resources, yet much of it remains unexplored.

The Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI) advances science-based policy research and international collaboration to address environmental, resource, economic, transport, and security challenges related to the ocean.

Our work spans issues in Japan and Asia, the polar regions, and island nations, while also strengthening education and capacity building in the ocean field.

Through cross-disciplinary knowledge sharing and practical initiatives, OPRI contributes to a sustainable ocean future and a more stable, peaceful global community.

Mission

1. Promoting understanding of the ocean through science and technology and reflecting this in policy
2. Analyzing maritime issues in Japan and Asia and promoting international cooperation for sustainable development
3. Identifying challenges in the polar regions and proposing solutions
4. Putting ideas into practice and making contributions towards the stability and prosperity of island countries and regions
5. Enhancing maritime human resources development and education
