SPF President Congratulates Dr. Syukuro Manabe on Winning the Nobel Prize in Physics

October 6, 2021
2 Min. Read
Global warming due to the increase in carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere has a large impact on the ocean environment through issues including rising sea level and ocean heat waves. Since the 1960s, Dr. Syukuro Manabe has been conducting research on quantifying the circulation of the atmosphere and ocean, and performing predictive simulations, laying the foundation for current research on global warming.

Dr. Manabe has cooperated with the Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI) at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, regarding research and information dissemination related to OPRI's projects on global warming and its relationship with the ocean. In addition to contributing an article to the "Ocean Newsletter" in 2011, he spoke at a special forum on "Global Warming and the Ocean" during his visit to Japan in October 2017. At this forum, he presented the results of a paper on ocean circulation and climate change that was published in the academic journal Nature Climate Change in the same year. Although he was in his late 80s then, I was very impressed in how he was still active as a researcher at the forefront of this field.

I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to Dr. Manabe for receiving the Nobel Prize.
