2025 is poised to become an “Ocean Super Year,” a pivotal moment for advancing international rules that safeguard our ocean. Notable developments include the entry into force of the BBNJ Agreement, the International Plastic Treaty, and the Fisheries Subsidies Agreement, as well as the establishment of regulations for the development of deep-sea mineral resources. However, despite the escalating impacts of climate change, awareness and understanding of marine science remain insufficient in Japan and around the world.
The Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) is committed to advancing international cooperation and science-driven policymaking under the vision of “achieving a peaceful world through the ocean." To this end, SPF seeks to deepen collaboration with polar regions, island nations, and African countries to advance efforts to protect and sustain our ocean for future generations. As a private foundation, SPF seeks to address new challenges, collaborate with diverse stakeholders through international conferences and special events, and amplify the urgency of advancing marine conservation to the world.
