H.E. Surangel S. Whipps Jr. is the 10th President of the Republic of Palau, first elected in January 2021 and re-elected for a second term in January 2025. A successful businessman and former senator, President Whipps is known for his strong advocacy of sustainable development, ocean conservation, and climate resilience. He has been a vocal leader for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) on global platforms, emphasizing the need for climate justice and sustainable blue economies. Prior to his presidency, he served two terms in the Palau National Congress (Olbiil Era Kelulau) and led Surangel & Sons Company, one of Palau’s largest private enterprises. Educated in the United States, he holds degrees in business and economics from Andrews University and the University of California, Berkeley. President Whipps continues to champion regional cooperation, economic diversification, and international partnerships—particularly with Japan and other Pacific allies—to promote sustainable prosperity for Palau, the Pacific region and the international community.
