SPF Public Webinar

Women’s Empowerment in Egypt: Initiatives and Challenges

Organized by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Asia and Middle East Program

The Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) cordially invites you to a public webinar entitled “Women’s Empowerment in Egypt: Initiatives and Challenges” by Dr. Hania Sholkamy, Associate Professor, Social Research Center, the American University in Cairo.

Dr. Sholkamy has been working on social protection issues in Egypt, with a particular focus on women's empowerment. In 2014, she helped design the cash transfer programs, which allowed mothers and female-headed households to receive benefits, when the Egyptian government introduced the programs.

The Egyptian government, in cooperation with international organizations, is working on initiatives that emphasize women's empowerment, such as formulating the “National Strategy for the Empowerment of Egyptian Women 2030” and the “National Strategy for Combating Violence against Women (2015-2020).”

In this webinar, Dr. Sholkamy will talk about the achievements of the government's efforts toward women's empowerment and gender justice, as well as the challenges that are difficult to overcome, using specific examples. The subsequent panel discussion will be joined by Dr. Kazuaki Takemura, who specializes in cultural anthropology and area studies, and has conducted field research in Egypt for many years.
