Invitation to a lecture by Dr. Eliot Cohen
"America's Strategic Choices" on January 13

The Sasakawa Peace Foundation has invited Dr. Eliot Cohen, the Robert E. Osgood Professor of Strategic Studies at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of the Johns Hopkins University to speak on the theme of ‘America's Strategic Choices” at a lecture in Tokyo on January 13, 2011. Dr. Cohen is a well known expert in strategic studies and author of the prize-winning book "Supreme Command: Soldiers, Statesmen, and Leadership in Wartime". During 2007-2009 he was Counselor of the Department of State and had a special responsibility as advisor to Secretary Condoleezza Rice on matters pertaining to such countries as Iraq and Afghanistan.
He holds the position that the preeminent status of the United States came to an end after 2008 and the US had to face the psychology of decline. However, he considers the US to have several basic strengths including political stability, economic dynamism, accumulated military capital, and a strong and developing set of alliances. If appropriate strategic decisions are made on the basis of these strengths, he claims, the US will be able to overcome its present challenges. In the course of his lecture, Dr. Cohen will shed light on the big challenges facing the US: how to deal with the Islamist movement, North Korea, and nuclear proliferation, how to interact with a rising China, and how to expand new alliances while sustaining old ones.
