As a result, we are now beginning to understand the large role the oceans play in environmental change and the resource potential that exists within them. At the same time, we are also starting to uncover evidence that human activity is undermining the health of our oceans. -
Emerging New Philosophy on the International Law of the Sea

The notorious situation in which Japan has not yet succeeded in forming its own Basic Ocean Policy to realize the Integrated Coastal Zone Management in her waters depends mainly upon a failure of follow-up studies regarding the new philosophy of international law which is embodied in UN Convention on the Law of the Sea as the Common Heritage of Mankind Principle.

Oceans and Ships Bringing Up Young People

The Mercantile Education Institution, with over 100 years of education and training experience, has a fleet of training vessels that are waiting to be put to further practical use. Amongst many abnormal social incidents and a rising youth crime rate, I'm sure that the stage set by the oceans and mercantile training could teach so much to the young people of Japan.
