When breakwaters are constructed in sea areas with coral reefs, it is sometimes unavoidable to destroy such natural habitats. However, at Naha port in Okinawa Prefecture, coral reefs were successfully restored with the passage of time through carefully prepared plans and construction works. While coral reefs tend to become victims of development around the world, such careful development can be applied with due consideration of the surrounding environment.
