Yacht kingdom Japan, some day
Kazuto Seki
Bronze Medalist, Double-handed Dinghy Men - 470, 2004 Olympic Sailing Competition, AthensUnfortunately, sailing competitions attract less attention in comparison with judo and gymnastics which are popular events at the Olympic Games. In Japan, there are now probably few people who know about sailing competitions in detail, or the excitement of the sport. However, once one goes sailing and feels the wind directly, anyone would soon notice the attraction of the sport. I believe that if new fans of sailing are gradually encouraged, "a yacht kingdom Japan" that would be revered around the world will be created someday. -

Tatsuhiko IkedaProfessor, International Graduate School of Sciences, Yokohama National UniversityKoichi MiyakeDirector-General Naha Ports and Airport Office,Okinawa General Bureau
When breakwaters are constructed in sea areas with coral reefs, it is sometimes unavoidable to destroy such natural habitats. However, at Naha port in Okinawa Prefecture, coral reefs were successfully restored with the passage of time through carefully prepared plans and construction works. While coral reefs tend to become victims of development around the world, such careful development can be applied with due consideration of the surrounding environment.
