The Ogasawara Islands consist of the Ogasawara Archipelago (Mukojima Islands, Chichijima Islands and Hahajima Islands), the Volcano (Iwo) Islands, Okinotorishima Island, Minamitorishima Island, and surrounding small islands such as Nishinoshima Island, Sofu Rock, etc. In 1876 (Meiji 9), Japanese rule over the Ogasawara Islands was notified to other countries, and Japanese sovereignty was confirmed then.

After the World War II, the islands were temporarily placed under the administration of the United States, but were returned to Japanese administration in 1968.
