During the pre-war period, the main industries of the Ogasawara Islands were agriculture and fisheries. Agriculture took advantage of the subtropical climate and shipped vegetables to the Japanese mainland, mainly during the winter months. The fisheries industry engaged in the fishing of tuna, mackerel scad, Spanish mackerel, and whales, among other species.
Following reversion of the islands, in order to stabilize the livelihood of the islanders who had returned to their homes, agriculture, fisheries, and tourism have been promoted as key industries in view of the natural conditions of the islands, and facilities and equipment necessary for the promotion of these industries have been developed, yielding results.
This section describes the industries of the Ogasawara Islands from the pre-Meiji period through the post-reversion years to the present, focusing on agriculture and fisheries.
