Translation Policy

We make every effort to produce English translations that are faithful to the information and form of the Japanese source texts while remaining readable and informative to the readers.

Japanese terms are written using the Hepburn romanization scheme, with macrons indicating long vowels. Japanese, Korean, and Chinese names are written in the traditional order, with surname first.

In principle, we spell the names of Japanese islands and other geographical features based on the names used by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan. Some exceptions are made for features with alternative names that have gained wide currency in the English-language world. Please refer to the list of Japanese Islands’ names on this website.
