Fishing for whales and green turtles, as well as coastal fishing were the main fishing activities. Islanders were prohibited from catching more than 30 green turtles for their own personal use and they were caught for the purpose of sale only when whaling ships would call in on the islands. Whaling business by Japanese was initiated by Nakahama Manjiro, an assistant to Egawa Tarozaemon, a Nirayama magistrate, but the whaling business was discontinued in 1863. (Ref. 1)
