Taking advantage of the sub-tropical climate, the main focus is on the production of vegetables, tropical fruits, and horticultural crops. For vegetables, tomatoes, okra, potatoes, watermelons have been cultivated. For fruits, passion fruits, mangos, lemons, bananas and papayas have been produced. (Ref. 1, 2)
At the time of the reversion, produce on Chichijima was grown mainly for local consumption and for tourists, rather than for markets in Tokyo. Particularly popular was the cultivation of bananas as souvenirs. In contrast, Hahajima concentrated on shipping produce to Tokyo, with a focus on pumpkins continuing from the pre-war era. (Ref. 2) In recent years coffee bean production has been gradually increasing, and processed items such as jams have also been developed. Major products such as passion fruit, lemons, and coffee have become specialty products and are in high demand not just for local consumption, but also for tourists, and supply is having trouble keeping pace with demand. On the other hand, the total production area has remained flat, due to the aging of the population and a lack of successors to take their place. (Ref. 1)
