Post-reversion fisheries

  • Feb 17, 2016

Even prior to reversion, some of the former islanders had been working to establish a fisheries cooperative, and following reversion on September 30, 1968, the Ogasawara Fisheries Cooperative, which had been established by the former islanders and local fishers, received official approval. (Ref. 1)

At the time of the reversion, as the infrastructure for the fisheries industries was not sufficiently developed and fishery techniques were still rudimentary, catches were not as large as expected and production remained flat. (Ref. 1) Thereafter, based on the Ogasawara Islands Reconstruction Plan and Development Plan, shared facilities and fishing ports have been developed. In addition, the modernization of fishing vessels and the acceptance and training of young fishers have helped to boost catches. Currently both Chichijima and Hahajima each have their own fisheries cooperative, and fishery is one of the key industry for the region and community. (Ref. 2)
