At the time of the reversion, the only commercial and service industry organization was the Ogasawara Cooperative Association (formerly Bonin Islands Trading Company (BITC)). This store sold beverages including alcohol, beer and juice, miscellaneous items for daily use, stationery and clothing, but it did not sell fresh produce like vegetables or fish, and goods were often in short supply. (Ref. 1) Distribution and logistics improved following the introduction of a regular shipping route, and other retail stores and restaurants started their business. Convenience further improved following the introduction of the Ogasawara-maru vessel in 1979, which helped to also stabilize tourism-related services.
