When first discovered, the Ogasawara Islands were uninhabited, but since the first settlers arrived from the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) in 1830, people have continued to live on the islands. However, the population has been subjected to extreme upheavals over the years, due to forced evacuations during World War II and the U.S. administration of the islands under the terms of the Treaty of Peace with Japan. This section includes information on population changes from the Meiji period onwards, and housing conditions directly related to the lives of residents.
