Integrated Coastal Management (ICM)

Obama City, Fukui Prefecture

Overview

We supported citizens' recommendations asking for the establishment of the Council for ICM in order to promote its smooth implementation every year in Obama City.

We have also concluded the Memorandum for Collaborative Research with Obama City 2013, to promote implementation of ICM together with the city and to have in-depth discussions.

Actions

In order for Obama City to shift to a phase where the city can independently implement ICM, OPRI and Obama City concluded the Memorandum for Collaborative Research and have been collaboratively convening the "Obama City Study Group for ICM." Through this approach, OPRI and Obama City secured the objectivity and transparency of all activities. To support these actions, OPRI also provided ICM video materials to Obama City to support their enlightenment activities to their citizens.

Through this action, the Obama City Study Group compiled civic recommendations and submitted them to the mayor in FY 2013. In FY 2014, Obama City launched the Obama City ICM Council. OPRI will continue holding study group meetings with the city and will support smooth implementation via advice on the management of the ICM Council as well as providing information and knowledge.

Progress

For the purpose of sharing various issues concerning coastal areas and discussing city development with various stakeholders such as public administration, industries, educational institutions and citizen groups, Obama City launched the Obama City Study Group for ICM in collaboration with OPRI, and then the Obama City ICM Council.
