On September 29, 2026, the Japan-U.S. and Security Studies Unit of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation hosted an exchange of views with two distinguished German experts: Dr. Alexandra Sakaki, Deputy Head of the Asia Research Division at SWP (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, German Institute for International and Security Affairs), and Lieutenant General (Ret.) Erhard Bühler of the German Bundeswehr (German Army). The exchange was organized in cooperation with the Japan Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Foundation (KAS).
During the meeting, participants exchanged views on recent security developments in the Indo-Pacific, with particular attention to Taiwan and cross-Strait security, Japan’s evolving security policy, and the implications of these developments for regional stability and the broader rules-based international order. The discussion provided an opportunity to share perspectives on key strategic challenges facing the region and to strengthen dialogue between Japanese and German experts on security issues of common interest.
