Bridging the Poles: Interpolar Dialogue in the Himalayas and Arctic
The Arctic Circle India Forum (May 2–4, 2025) marked a groundbreaking chapter in climate diplomacy by bringing the Arctic and the “Third Pole” – the Hindu Kush Himalaya – into direct conversation. In a plenary session titled “Interpolar Dialogue and the Himalayas/Third Pole: Strengthening Climate Governance and Policy Action in Cryosphere Regions,” leaders and experts from polar and mountain regions — including President Mitsutaku Makino and Research Fellow Santosh Kumar Rauniyar of the Ocean Policy Research Institute at SPF — addressed the shared challenges of a warming cryosphere.

Exploring the Balance Between Ocean Conservation and Economic Development
Blue Economy Week to be Held at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai Starting June 2

SPF will host Blue Economy Week from Monday, June 2 to Sunday, June 8 at the Blue Ocean Dome pavilion of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. Over the course of seven days, a series of events will be held under the theme of “realizing a peaceful world through the ocean.” Experts and local government officials at the forefront of the blue economy will come together for panel discussions, lectures, and symposiums.

The Study Group on New Nuclear Arms Control and Disarmament Initiatives (chaired by Professor Tatsujiro Suzuki, Nagasaki University), established by the SPF Security Studies Program, has published a set of policy recommendations as this year marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

On June 19, SPF will host a symposium that will explore challenges identified through ongoing efforts and examine initiatives that promote the coexistence of foreign residents in Japan, inviting representatives from three embassies and the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.
