Gaikokujin-Shujutoshi-Kaigi Online Symposium 2024

Bringing multicultural coexistence to the agenda nationwide

Considering what is necessary for a multicultural society in the future with key persons active in these communities

Organized by: Gaikokujin-Shujutoshi-Kaigi
Co-organized by: Sasakawa Peace Foundation

Gaikokujin-Shujutoshi-Kaigi is an organization made up of 11 cities in Japan with significant foreign resident populations. It conducts studies and research on the policy toward resolution of various problems which foreign residents face and that can harness the diversity of foreign residents to revitalize cities in a multicultural coexistence society.

The Sasakawa Peace Foundation is pleased to co-organize Gaikokujin-Shujutoshi-Kaigi Online Symposium 2024 on the theme of "Bringing multicultural coexistence to the agenda nationwide: Considering what is necessary for a multicultural society in the future with key persons active in these communities.”

Currently, the Japanese government is promoting further acceptance of foreign human resources by introducing a new scheme of ikusei shuurou (training and employment). In light of this policy, local governments that accept foreigners as residents are expected to face various challenges when incorporating non-Japanese residents into the community, making efforts to support living together in harmony a nationwide issue.

This event will provide an opportunity to share the experience on the ground regarding multicultural coexistence with the rest of Japan through the exchange of opinions in a panel discussion. Participants will include members from cities with significant foreign resident populations, related ministries and agencies, as well as key persons active in the region including companies working to realize a multicultural society, organizations related to Japanese language classes, and others. Through various discussions, this event will be an opportunity to consider a range of perspectives about the future of multicultural conviviality and the acceptance of foreign residents in this country at this important time.

We look forward to seeing many of you there.
