Two-Part Webinar Series on "Violent Extremism in Indonesia and Japan"

Second Webinar "Lessons learnt from Japan's experiences with Aum Shinrikyo: An understanding of the religious background and a psychological approach to de-radicalization"

Organized by Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), The Habibie Center

The Sasakawa Peace Foundation and the Habibie Centre will co-host a series of online seminar themed on “Violent Extremism in Indonesia and Japan." In the second session, "Lessons learnt from Japan's experiences with Aum Shinrikyo: an understanding of the religious background and a psychological approach to de-radicalization," we will learn about the Aum Shinrikyo experience in Japan from the perspective of violent extremism from leading experts in religious studies and psychology.

In recent years, even democracies, such as European countries, have been faced with the threat of extremism and terrorism, as seen in the murder of a teacher in Paris last year. Japan is no exception. The Aum Shinrikyo sarin gas attack on the subway system in March 1995 killed 13 people and injured thousands of others; in July 2018, 13 former cult leaders were executed on death row.

Twenty-five years have already passed since the Aum Shinrikyo incident. What lessons can we learn from this incident and apply them to counter violent extremism and terrorism in the new era? The webinar will review and discuss Japan's experience in dealing with violent and religious extremism in the 1980s and 1990s from the perspective of de-radicalization in Indonesia and the world.

We look forward to your participation.
