National Security and Japan-U.S. Program Seminars

SPF Japan-U.S. Program Cordially Invites You to Attend a Discussion about the “U.S. in 2020: Changing Society and Presidential Election”
(Friday, February 7, 2020)

Organized by Sasakawa Peace Foundation

On February 7, 2020, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation will welcome Prof. Toshihiro Nakayama from Keio University and Prof. Paul Sracic from Youngstown State University in Ohio for a discussion about the changing society in the U.S. and the upcoming presidential election.

For the 2020 U.S. presidential election, President Trump has been aiming to be re-elected and the selection of the Democratic presidential candidate will begin in earnest with the Iowa caucuses on February 3, 2020. Trump’s re-election would have a significant impact on U.S. domestic politics as well as on the international order, while the competition among Democratic candidates for the primary remains hotly contested.

Back in 2016, the election results surprised the world. In particular, we have known that the traditional Democrat white working class in the Midwest had a significant effect on the outcome of the election. In 2020, it is inevitable that similar trends will have greater impact on the campaign. To understand such trends and the potential impact on American society and the 2020 presidential election, we will invite Prof. Nakayama, an expert on American politics who also has been closely watching the latest developments in U.S. society as a Woodrow Wilson Center Japan Scholar from 2018 to 2019, and Prof. Paul Sracic, who is an expert on the working class and trade issues in U.S. politics. They will discuss political trends of the U.S. in 2020 and the changing dynamics of American society.
