Philanthropy Trend 2022

Report on the Growth of Philanthropy Sector in Indonesia (in partnership with Filantropi Indonesia)

By Sasakawa Peace Foundation and Filantropi Indonesia

July 28, 2023
Since Indonesia's democratization in 1999, the number of corporate foundations has been rapidly increasing as legislation has been enacted to make CSR activities mandatory for companies. With the aim of exploring future collaboration with the philanthropic sector in Indonesia, the Peacebuilding Department, in cooperation with Filantropi Indonesia, examined the performance of (1) corporate foundations, (2) corporate CSR activities, and (3) family foundations in the three-year period from 2018 to 2020 including the first year of the pandemic.

According to information from publicly available financial statements and reports, we found the total figure of expenditures of (1) Indonesian corporate foundations, (2) CSR activities exemplified by leading 21 companies, and (3) family foundations in the three years was, Rp 2.7 trillion, Rp 2.3 trillion, and Rp 959 billion respectively. Additionally, the scale of their activities expanded in response to massive societal needs during the pandemic.

The research team has reviewed annual reports and related documents as well as interviews with foundation officials, to the extent available and, as a result, proposes policy recommendations including the need for further disclosure (corporate foundations, corporate CRS) and consideration of tax exemptive measures (corporate CSR).

Rapid baseline study – Community mediation practices in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao

Community mediation serves as a cornerstone of conflict prevention and management in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), offering a culturally grounded approach to addressing family disputes, clan feuds, and other locally driven tensions. This report presents findings from a rapid baseline study conducted by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation in partnership with Conciliation Resources, examining how a diverse range of actors practice mediation across the region. By mapping community-based mediation as it operates in practice, the study offers a foundational reference for peacebuilding efforts and informs policy development in BARMM.

Introducing SPF Reports on the Rohingya Refugee Crisis

Introducing SPF Reports on the Rohingya Refugee Crisis

The Rohingya refugee crisis, now in its eighth year, represents one of the world’s most protracted humanitarian emergencies. With over 1.1 million stateless Rohingyas sheltering in Bangladesh—primarily in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char—the crisis has evolved beyond a humanitarian issue into a multidimensional challenge involving regional security, diplomatic deadlock, and livelihood vulnerabilities. To address these complexities, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation has published two key reports.
