    4th Edition, 2023

Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) / East-West Center

    July 10, 2023
SPF's Japan-U.S. Program and the East-West Center in Washington D.C. have published the fourth edition of the “Japan Matters for America/America Matters for Japan” (JMA/AMJ) booklet.

This JMA/AMJ booklet, written in both English and Japanese, provides readers with information about the bilateral connections between Japan and the United States through trade, investment, jobs, diplomacy, security, education, tourism, population, and community connections, including data and graphs.

    1. A wide range of topics from politics, economics, and military affairs to community connections are presented in an easy-to-understand format.

    Highlights:

★ Japan and the United States share
long-standing economic, military, and cultural relationships.

★ Around 70% of public opinion in both Japan and the United States
    supports the Japan-U.S. alliance.

★ Japan creates more jobs in the United States
    than any other Indo-Pacific country.

★ The United States is Japan's largest source of outward investment
and the largest investor in Japan.

★ Pre-COVID-19, Japan was the largest source of visitors to the United States
    among Indo-Pacific countries.

★ Both Japan and the United States have
the largest number of sister city relationships between two countries
compared to the number of sister city relationships with other countries.

    2. New categories are added to the 4th edition.

The fourth edition of the JMA, which has been updated since the first edition in 2010, now includes information on COVID-19 vaccine provision, technology, and innovation (semiconductors, space, etc.).

★ The United States and Japan have delivered
over 200 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to the Indo-Pacific.

    3. "Selected Stories" on a wide range of subjects have been added.
JMA includes information on Japan-U.S. relations regarding a wide variety of topics such as Japanese sake, space, baseball, etc.

    4. State-by-state information is presented on a single sheet.

Along with the booklet, an updated database on state information is available now. This database provides a one-page summary for each state outlining how they interact with Japan in terms of trade, investment, jobs, exchange students, Japanese-American population, tourism, and community connections. This database has received great attention from congressional representatives.
