As a fellow Pacific maritime nation, Japan has always had close ties with Pacific island nations. Since the establishment of the Pacific Island Nations Fund in 1989, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, as a private organization, has worked to encourage exchange, foster human resource development, and contribute to regional stability and prosperity.
