Project Outline
Local governments in Japan which are in charge of regions bordering other countries face a number of policy issues regarding the gap in economic development and border control with the neighboring countries in question. However, on top of the fact that central government is unaware of such issues and the measures local governments take to counteract them. The respective local governments, although they face similar problems, have no opportunities to share their experience or communicate directly. Furthermore, although organizations that provide opportunities for researchers and practitioners to jointly conduct border studies do exist at various locations throughout the world, there are no such institutions in Japan or Eurasia.
In this project, practitioners who have worked to build networks between researchers of border studies in Japan will attempt to create forums for discussion between practitioners. These people will then be put in touch with Japanese researchers in order to establish 'Border Studies Network Japan', which will forge connections with border studies researchers worldwide.
