To enhance the ocean science-policy-society nexus under the international framework of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (“the Ocean Decade"), this project will examine components of such nexus (see below) in national and global scale. The proposed actions will be communicated to stakeholders based on the research results.
FY2026 Implementation Items
- Global survey of “the ocean we want”: Conduct a survey on public awareness of the ocean in various countries to infer the priority areas in policy research and science communication through the Ocean Decade, as well as the compelling narratives and expected international partnerships.
- Participatory surveys in regional hubs of ocean science-policy interface: Investigate structure, challenges and expected actions in the regional hubs of ocean science-policy interface (e.g. the four IOC-UNESCO Regional Sub-Commission) through the participatory survey and propose recommendations for strategies for each region.
- Community science in the ocean space: Review existing efforts on evaluation methods to incentivize scientists to collaborate with policy and community and develop recommendations on its implementation in the field of ocean science.
Structure of Japan's ocean science research institutions: Examine potential measures to improve the environment of domestic marine research institutions through comparative analysis of other countries and discuss those with policy makers through study groups to formulate concrete measures to deal with the situation.
