Marine observation is becoming increasingly important now that adapting to global warming is an urgent issue. However, the field of developing marine technologies is far from booming. In this article, I would like to describe one approach to marine observation equipment and also describe the state of technological development. These are shaped by my experiences designing and developing observation equipment at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and launching a startup company to utilize the technology I had developed for society.

As interest towards economic security grows, we cannot ignore ocean policy’s trilemma of trying to strike a balance between developing the economy, environment, and security. This article focuses on the relationship between these three aspects of ocean policy, and provides a sustainability-focused overview of what we call "economic security" to gain a foothold in the new ocean policy landscape.

In April 2022, Osaka City University and Osaka Prefecture University merged to form Osaka Metropolitan University, the largest public university in Japan. At Osaka Metropolitan University, 8 professors and 8 associate professors who conduct ocean-related research are taking part in education and research from a marine perspective in order to realize a sustainable society.
