Policy Recommendations for Satellite VDES in a Digital Maritime Era
TANAKA Kotaro (Research Fellow, Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation)
Expectations are increasing for VDES’s capabilities as a next-generation maritime communications infrastructure that can globally transmit and receive information on safe vessel navigation and maritime information from the coast to the sea. Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI) of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation has compiled policy proposals for the introduction of satellite VDES based on the results of its research to date. We hope this article will provide an opportunity to consider the widespread use of satellite VDES and, by extension, progress with maritime digitalization.

Nature Restoration Activities at Oshima Tidal Flat in Shunan City
YAMAGUCHI Hiromitsu (Head of Secretariat, Oshima Tidal Flat Growers Association)
The Oshima tidal flat in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is an artificial tidal flat that was constructed to create favorable marine environments. We, the Oshima Tidal Flat Growers Association, have been raising manila clams as part of our conservation activities to make the tidal flat an even more productive sea. In doing so, seaweed and algae like eelgrass and Japanese eelgrass have grown as a side effect, giving the tidal flat a new value. Our work is becoming part of the movement towards achieving a sustainable society.

The Ocean Museum that Travels to Classrooms
WATANABE Yumi (Lecturer, School of Marine Science and Technology, Tokai University)
Marine education is getting a trial run at elementary, junior high, and senior high schools throughout Japan. Then, we considered: Is there a way for schools in regions far from the ocean to learn about the ocean in a hands-on way? Are there any educational materials which can offer perspectives from multiple fields and opportunities for industry-academia-government collaboration? These questions led to the creation of the “Classroom Museum: Ocean's Bounty for You!” In this article, I will describe the work of this traveling museum which utilizes classrooms and other facilities under themes of familiar foods and marine products.
