In 2018, a full 150 years since the start of the Meiji Period, there are increased expectations to take on new efforts in overcoming the growing dangers in our oceans. It is of utmost importance for Japan to take the lead in protecting this global common resource, by encouraging the international community to engage in innovative efforts such as promoting human capacity building and diplomacy through science and technology.

The Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2017. These are important sites that have been protected since ancient times by local people including fishermen in the Munakata region, who worshiped the island as God. Following its registration as a World Heritage Site, we hope to continue our efforts as before to protect this belief, and pass it along to the next generation.
