The research vessel "Kairei" of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), carried out an ocean floor survey in March 2016, focusing on the ocean area of the Federated States of Micronesia. Based on this experience, I will discuss potential forms of international cooperation with island states and others in future, through effective utilization of JAMSTEC's research vessels and facilities. I believe it will be of utmost importance to build up a relationship in which both sides can cooperate on an equal footing.

Maritime pilots are responsible for quickly and safely leading ships through the 35 designated "pilotage areas" in Japan, which include harbors with large volumes of shipping traffic and other areas likely to present difficulties to navigation. Given the public nature of the work of maritime pilots, along with the difficulties in finding successors, it is hoped that a mutually supportive public maritime pilot system can be established in future.

An aquarium's role in society is to serve as a place to experience the importance and mystery of life. To this end, the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium has undertaken initiatives to "connect" the lives of organisms. Through these efforts, we achieved the world's first indoor reproduction of the loggerhead turtle as well as Japan's first reproduction of a Beluga whale. By highlighting the successes of our reproduction studies in our exhibitions, we hope to show our visitors the inspiration that can come from life.
