The Safety and Environment Center for Petroleum Development of the Engineering Advancement Association of Japan has been carrying out research studies concerning the safety and environmental protection of offshore oil and natural gas development.Here, I would like to give an overview of environmental impact assessments in countries leading the developments of offshore oil and natural gas, such as the United States, in the hopes that they will provide perspectives on the ways environmental impact assessments should be utilized in marine resource development. In addition, I would like to introduce the overviews of a study comparing and analyzing data such as environmental impact assessments used in actual development projects.

The region where the Shimane Peninsula, Shinji-ko Lake, and Nakanoumi came together, is known to be where the Old Izumo Culture was created.In the "Izumo-no-kuni Fudoki," a legend passed on in this region, the mythology, highlighting the peoples' lives and nature in the area, shows how the backdrop proved enough context for this.With this backdrop, we can see that this region in Japan is notable for being one of the most distinct areas that went through a huge geological fluctuation during the Cenozoic Era.

While in close relation to our society, the situation and risks concerning the problems of ocean warming and acidification are not widely known, and are not at a level where mitigation and adaptation methods have been well considered by the masses.In response to this situation, utilizing the main objective of a museum specializing in shellfish and bringing up hot topic keywords to gather interest, we held the exhibit "Cliones and Ocean Acidification," in order to create an opportunity to bring up mitigation and adaptation measures to the problem.
