From Scientific Knowledge to Local and Regional Ocean Policies

Former IOC (UNESCO) Chairperson / Academia del MarIn order to realize sustainable development and use of the ocean, there is a need to manage local and regional policy-making and implementation plans. The ¨Academia del Mar¨ has prepared the "Guidelines for a National Ocean Policy in Argentina," a document that aims to help policymakers, managers and others stakeholders in our society promote realistic State Policy. This paper shares these ideas, which are centered in the best use of scientific knowledge and in a systematic and trans-disciplinary approach. -
Ariake Sea Tidal Flats: Thirty years after beginning research we are now entering the age of an environment management network

The Ariake Sea tidal flats are Japan's largest, accounting for 40% of the nation's total, and, from sand to mud dominated types, they show great variety. Especially noteworthy are the Ariake Sea tidal flats Estar attraction, the mud dominated flats, which have an astounding water purification capacity. The roles that regional universities are being called upon to play in solving the environmental problems surrounding the tidal flats are to develop human resources, materials, and technological networks as well as provide residents with easy to understand information from an unbiased and objective perspective.

One of the things science can do is depict natural phenomena that have never happened before. Global warming is an example of this. But as to conveying the reality of what that horrific tsunami would actually be like, were people made sufficiently aware beforehand? It's important that we rethink what kind of knowledge society needs about the ocean and how best to express it so that the average person gets a feel for the reality it entails.
