Many natural bounties are to be found in the area surrounding Shima, but how to carry out long-term sustainable use of such resources is also a global issue, being the focus of discussions at the Oceans Day event at Rio+20 on how to establish a "blue economy. EBeing located within the boundaries of a national park, Shima's natural abundance is consciously protected by many of its residents, but Shima's future development and economic growth depends on whether it can reinvent itself as a new "sato-umi city Ein line with the blue economy approach.

On Miura City's Ocean Education Initiatives

Miura City, located at the southern tip of the Miura peninsula between Tokyo Bay and Sagami Bay, concluded an agreement of cooperation with the University of Tokyo's Misaki Marine Biological Station in March of last year and began its ocean education initiative. What kind of preparations and coordination are needed to ensure a smooth adoption of this new ocean education curriculum? This article introduces the promotional framework Miura City developed for the initiative.

"Japan has the 6th largest ocean area in the world. Let's go to its very edge! EThis is the name of an initiative I have begun with children. How do people live in these areas? What do the children do there? Industries? Protection of the sea? Relations with countries bordering the same ocean?Through the investigative experiences of these child reporters, we are able to think more clearly about the problems faced by areas along our national borders as well as the roles these areas play. This article reports on the possibilities for a new ocean education.
