The Strategy of Tsunami Disaster Prevention based on Scientific Documentation of Tsunamis

In reference to protection and damage control, concrete parameters for two levels of tsunami have been decided on the basis of this scientific documentation. It is now important to promote comprehensive disaster prevention. -
Nuclear Power and the Ocean

In Japan, the connection between nuclear power and the ocean goes back to the nuclear powered ship Mutsu, which marked an important milestone in the country's nuclear research and development. Uranium, though in extremely low density, is found in seawater, and development and experiments towards its recovery are already being carried out. Development of nuclear powered ships was abandoned with only the Mutsu to show for it, but dreams of nuclear power and the ocean are endless.

In Japan, improvement of ocean education is an issue of the first importance from a variety of perspectives. We believe that natural history museums such as aquariums, which deal with living specimens from the ocean, have a role not only in school curriculums, but should carry out close cooperation with a variety of institutions, including universities, businesses, citizen groups, public administration, other museums, libraries, and community centers to promote "learning from the ocean."
